MANEL microarc oxidation technology

Microarc oxidation or MAO method (other names microplasma oxidation, plasma electrolytic oxidation) is that when a high-density current is passed through the metal-electrolyte interface, conditions are created when micro-arc discharges with high local temperatures and pressures appear on the metal surface.
The result of the discharges action is the coating layer formation consisting of oxidized forms of base metal elements and electrolyte components
Depending on the microarc oxidation mode choice and the electrolyte composition, it is possible to obtain ceramic coatings with unique characteristics and a wide range of applications.

Properties of coatings
Decorative appearance
MAO-MANEL makes it possible to obtain finishing decorative coatings with a magnificent appearance, stable color, which retain their properties throughout the entire service life of the product. The color of the coatings is due to the formed oxide-ceramic coating composition, which does not contain dye pigments; therefore, there is no color change (burnout) during operation.

If necessary, MAO-MANEL decorative coatings can be additionally processed with special organic compositions to enhance a number of properties, such as resistance to aggressive media, electrical insulating properties and wear resistance.

The black color coating (MAO black) is the most demanded in the industry at the present time. It is widely used in instrument engineering, electronic components production, optical devices production and small arms parts production.
Wear-resistance
The MAO-MANEL use gives the products surfaces made of aluminum, titanium and magnesium alloys resistance to wear in various aggressive environments. The protective properties of coatings are higher than those of traditional electroplating - anodic oxidation and chromium plating. As a result, the scope of products application is expanding. The method is applicable for the repair of worn parts, including the existing coating remove.
Corrosion-resistance
Due to the fact that the MAO-MANEL coatings have a uniform layer on all surfaces of the product, including through and blind holes, they show high values of corrosion resistance, up to 2000 hours in a salt fog chamber (GOST 9.308).

The coatings consist of a complex composition ceramics and are dielectrics that allow avoiding the occurrence of contact corrosion (galvanic couples) when they are used together with other metals.
Optical properties
Black coatings (MAO black) have additionally optical black color. Their absorption coefficient is 0.97. MAO black coatings have the same tone color on all aluminum, titanium and magnesium alloys. This, in combination with the high protective properties, the ability to apply coating on internal surfaces and threaded parts, made it possible to introduce a coating method for optical devices and equipment parts.
Electrical and thermal insulation properties
MAO coatings consist of complex composition oxide ceramics and have electrical and thermal insulation properties. These characteristics increase with the coating thickness growth, and special organic compositions additional processing.
MAO as a sublayer
MAO-MANEL technology has been used to form a coating on the surface of body parts made of light alloys, which serves as a sublayer for paints and varnishes since 2004. Excellent adhesion of subsequent layers of paints and varnishes is provided and the corrosion resistance of the surface is increased due to the developed porous structure of thin MAO films (5-15 microns) and gradient layer (smooth transition from metal to coating). In this case, corrosion resistance is provided on surfaces that are not subject to painting, but have a layer of MAO coating. Long-term experience in application and positive feedback from Customers indicate the MAO technology effectiveness use, the replace effectiveness of traditional surface preparation methods, such as anodic and chemical oxidation, with MAO.
Protective properties for military use
MANEL has experience of interaction with military-industrial complex enterprises both at the stages of development / modernization of military products and in the services provision for coating parts of serial products since 2010.

Our specialists have unique experience in solving technically complex problems including small (up to 3 mm) through and blind holes, threads coating, individual items parts selective coating.

Products with MAO-MANEL coatings passed the technical acceptance of military products.
Special properties
MAO-MANEL coating use is not limited to the above directions. Our team of researchers and technologists have solved hundreds of production tasks for our customers for 10 years of practice, including non-standard tasks that could not be solved using other surface treatment technologies.
In general, the MAO technological process includes the following stages and operations:
1. Input control of the surface condition for compliance with the requirements of GOST, KD and other regulatory documents
2. Preparation of the surface of parts for MAO: removal of contaminants, traces of oils, cutting fluid. If the surface condition meets the requirements of the documentation, preparation may not be performed
3. Insulation of surfaces requiring the absence of MAO-coating
4. Installation of parts on the suspension, installation of the suspension on the MDO bath
8. Output control
5. Application of MAO coating
6. Flushing
7. Dismantling and drying of coated parts
